Jaguar dealers face forced break in new car business

Jaguar's strategic decision to become a luxury electric car brand from 2025 has enormous consequences for dealers. In some countries, including the British home market, Jaguar will not be able to sell new cars for about a year.

Auto Motor Sport reports that Jaguar dealerships will temporarily become used car outlets. The German magazine refers to an interview with brand managing director Rawdon Glover, who explains, among other things, that Jaguar needs to make space in its model range and factories before its switch to becoming an electric brand in 2025. For this reason, “production and sales of the current models will gradually be discontinued.”

Sales of the current range will end everywhere in twelve months at the latest. In the UK, however, this will apply from the beginning of 2025 and in some other European markets from the end of 2024. According to the Jaguar boss, dealers should concentrate on “the used car business and customer service” during this time.

The background to this is that the British car manufacturer will only build one of its current models in future. Production of a total of five models will be discontinued at the end of the year. The manufacturer is thus preparing for the aforementioned switch to electric drives in 2025. Of course, economic interests also play a role: CEO Adrian Mardell told investors in July that the five models being cancelled from the production schedule are not profitable. Only the F-Pace mid-size SUV will continue to roll off the production line. The latter is available with a combustion engine and as a hybrid variant.

It was announced last summer that the fully electric Jaguar I-Pace – currently the brand’s only electric model – was among the models to be discontinued. As the first representative of the new electric era will not follow until 2026, there will be a considerable gap.

That decision is commercial suicide. For every JLR customer like me, who will need to replace his JLR car right in the middle of this period, I'll be forced to buy a BMW or Audi.

Agreed ! I have had two Jaguars, was planning on my third. Loved the car. I am thinking Volvo. Or BMW. needless to say those cars was always not my first choice.

They dont care, current Jaguar owners are not their future target market. You can still buy Land Rovers

I assume you are aware Land Rovers are not really Jaguars? Respectfully, &c. Remy

I imagine they’ll be pushing for customers to buy Land Rover / Range Rover in the meantime but how they fit themselves into this mess I don’t know. Presumably they’re going o give all sorts of incentives to dealerships to stop them leaving as well as customers

dealers led down the road, investors pouring millions in and then the opportunity to recoup snatched away on a whim, even if they get it right, and who knows if there is a market for them...will dealers stay with the brand..we will see.BC

I own both an F-pace SVR and an F-type R, and love them both. I would prefer to continue to support the brand , BUT have zero interest in a EV. Sorry Mr. Mardell, you really need to ‘read the room’.

I agree, this is not going end well. I'm not interested in an EV at the moment, (at least until it can do a 1000km on a charge ). They should have kept going with petrol, diesel ( 4, 6, and 8 cylinders) and electrics, that would have kept all the current and new customers happy

Local Jag dealer said he could help me into a new car in 9 to 15 months and was not interested in trading in my 4.5 years old top spec E pace. Now in a Genesis and not likely to go back to Jag

The way the world economies are, and the uncertainty with geopolitics in middle east, Russia and far east China, you would think JLR would be going the opposite way ie making affordable EV's to compete with the likes of BYD, KIA and Hyundai. This is suicidal at best.

With EV sales falling it seems strange that they would stop production of ice cars. With a wait of nine months for a new car and no ice cars customers will buy elsewhere and Jaguar will probably die as a car brand. Shame I love my Jaguars from my first Etype, Stype, xj6 to my currant xj8

What a joke. I own an F Type V6 S having made what seems to be a mistake switching from BMW a few years ago. It's a great car. However the big question is do we bite the bullet and dispose of our cars now ? JLR has completely lost it's direction. Or do we wait and take the ride to the bottom of the ocean tethered to these stooges ? Maintenance is likely to be a big challenge going forward...

Such a shame who made this radical suicidal Business decision. Contacted my local Jaguar dealer to renew my F pace and was told it was my last chance to get a proper one. This put me off and I have bought a BMW instead.

Never owned a Jag, have owned a LR though. Not one positive or supportive comment. Are they listening? If not, who is there future market? Why are they not listening to the experience of other EV sales.

I cannot believe that vehicle suicide was possible. I have had two Jaguars in the past four years. My F pace will be the last. I live in a cold state the battery live in the cold is less than half.

I love Jag's. Big mistake Mr Chairman, looking at other large companies who are dropping electric and moving to hydrogen powered, which many customers have shown an interest. This could be the end of Jag

Suicidal decisions to move to electric luxury cars that nobody wants. Jaguars are about prestige cars that drive and handle amazingly, as sporty as a BMW and as comfortable as a Merc, something those two are incapable of combining into one car. AUDI? come on get real. Bloated luxury cars with large heavy batteries will handle like a super tanker, you can't beat the laws of physics

I always had great customer service from Guy Salmon in Northampton. But it has since changed to Sytner. My recent experience of this group was very poor. They tried to pressurise me to purchase new. I am very happy with my Jaguar and have no intention or changing it. My point being as present owners of Jaguars we will soon be the dealers bread and butter, ie servicing etc . I had an email from them requesting the opportunity to regain my trust if I got intouch. I did and 6 weeks later not a word from them.???.

Having moved from an F Type, which I loved, to an I Pace three years ago, I can honestly say my EV is superb (apart from the range) and I'm looking forward to what they bring out next. Just hope they haven't trashed the resale value of our current Jags in doing it this way...

It’s not just about going electric. JLR is rebranding to compete with the likes of Bentley, Rolls Royce and Austin Martin. They are moving to the ultra luxury segment with the associated price point. This is a massive undertaking and I am really curious so see what the new cars are all about.

Same thing is happening with Volvo. They discontinued the S60. Eventually bringing out an electric sedan. Salesman didn't listen to me when I told them Volvo no longer will have anything for me and not to contact me again. I don't want any electric vehicle. And I certainly don't want any suv model. Ever.

Jaguar is comitting suicide. Not an electric fan and never will be. Forcing me now to get rid of my E-Pace soon and change brand. What a disappointed you have become. SA is anyway far drom ready for elecric vehicles. You think you not making money currently, you realy think it's going get better with only electric cars? Clearly have not done your homework.properly.

But now I'm not a target customer like many others. So now my next vehicle has to be something else. Almost forced to look st Audi, Porsche. Sad

It was 2025 now 2026, come on jaguar, do you really think potential Jaguar buyers are going to believe or have faith in the Jaguar brand after launch delays? Delays after delays. I worked at Jaguar and as a manager there from 1995. Jaguar could have launched the electric XJ with a six to seven year life span (about average)and paid back some of that expensive development R/D costs and 500 million of the taxpayers government grant.

India has destroyed Britain’s steel business by failing to make the necessary strategic long-term investments into the modern type of blast furnaces. They are doing the same to our car business with this disastrous decisions for Jaguar. First they produced an ununreliable e.car that customer’s were disappointed with and just now they have informed customers there is going to be a relaunch and significant gap in at production while TATA group reorganise the business. I would not be surprised to discover that they want to destroy one of Britain’s last major luxury car manufacturers regardless of the legacy and employees. All this while the government and trade unions sit back and watch it all happen.. What is really going on here ? Are we being lied to ?

Commercial suicide so end of the brand. I have always loved my Jaguars but like millions of others, I refuse to succumb to an all electric vehicle so shall seek alternatives elsewhere and keep my current Jaguar for along as possible.

I was born in a Jaguar, my dad driving one for years, and passing on his love of the marque to me. I love my XE and was set to buy an F-Type now that the other is paid off, but as much as I love the car, that might not be very smart. Where would I get the service done when Jaguar goes bankrupt and closes their doors? EV sales are way down in the last several months, and Jaguar is there a clearly committing suicide as a business. If the customers wanted electric vehicles wouldn't they have sold the I-Pace like crazy?

Jaguar ceased being Jaguar after the 2008 model year. Tata motors destroyed everything that made a Jaguar uniquely Jaguar. I will hold on to my x350 as long as I can and cherish the feeling I get every time I drive it.

I am on my 7th jag, have had very little trouble with them at all. I have tried other brands and always returned to jaguar. Its now the end of a very enjoyable story. It is madness given what is happening in the EV market.

One thing I find interesting is that a lot of small to medium sized modern Jags are driven by women. It wouldn't surprise me if JLR have completely missed an opportunity here by not focusing on women enough.

I have 3 beautiful Jaguars. An S Type Sport, an S Type R, & an XE 3.0 S. Jaguar are a disgrace in Australia. My local dealer has not had a Jaguar in their showroom for 3 years. How does that happen???. Now they will expect us to buy their unwanted EVs'. REALLY!

Sad they made they made the decision to go all electric, and can only hope they come to their senses and reverse it. Perhaps their Board needs to change who is at the Helm of JLR. We just bought our 2nd F-Pace and clearly love the brand.

So disappointing. Most idiotic decision you could ever make. My last 2 cars were both Jaguars, first being the XF, and my current car the XK. My next purchase would have been the F type, however they can forget it. I won't be going Jaguar ever again. I actually hope this all back fires on them and they go bump.Jaguar motto was Grace, Sace & Pace, And have built their reputation providing sports cars.I can't believe they are intending knocking out SUV's and only electric. I used to be proud of their heritage and felt like a king owning their cars. Now they're going to be another mundane SUV manufacturer

I was a Sales Manager with a Jaguar Dealer from 1992 to 2002, then Dealer Principle for ten years. When Jaguar announced in the 1990’s that they wanted to compete with BMW, Mercedes and Audi, and make the S-TYPE and X-TYPE, we Dealers tried to dissuade them. The decisions came from elsewhere so they didn’t listen to us. They never competed with the volume of the German brands but it was hoped the name and quality would win a market share. In fact the forerunner to the F-Type was binned in the late 1990’s to allow investment in the S-TYPE. I never liked the S or X-TYPE, vile reskinned Ford’s and Lincoln’s.Unfortunately they have diluted the Jaguar brand while LR has gone from strength to strength.I think it’s a good idea to take stock and rethink the brand to recapture the Grace, Pace and Style”. However the brand was never on a par with RR, Bentley or Aston Martin and shouldn’t be reinvented to compete in that market.
