Shanghai to electrify bus and taxi services by 2027
Under the plan, in the period 2024 to 2027, Shanghai aims to replace over 9 per cent of its total public buses and taxis with NEVs every year. This means that a total of around 6,200 NEV buses and 11,000 NEV taxis will be introduced over the next three years.
Alongside introducing new vehicles, Shanghai has also stated that it plans to phase out its ageing buses and “vigorously develop various types of new energy buses,” according to the portal Xinhua. The buses are planned to run on a variety of energy sources, including battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles. The focus will initially be on battery-electric vehicles, as the city will also improve the maintenance of the bus batteries and launch a programme to replace the batteries at a later time, “with an estimated annual update of 500 sets of bus batteries.” There will initially be some pilot projects for fuel cell buses, writes Xinhua.
Regarding the taxi fleets, it is expected that around 2,800 NEV taxis will have to be acquired each year to meet its target of 11,000 NEVs by 2027. To achieve this, all newly acquired taxis are to be New Energy Vehicles, so either battery-electric or fuel-cell electric, once this plan is officially put into force.
