The first round took place about one year ago, when the state made 100 million dollars in funding available and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) released the requirements for manufacturers and dealers to apply to the incentive programme.

According to the New York Governor’s office, more than 75 school districts applied for funding for some 350 electric school buses during the first round.

“NYSERDA is proud to help New York State public schools transition to clean, electric student transportation fleets with a robust funding available for buses, charging infrastructure, and electrification plans,” said New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Doreen M. Harris. “We look forward to supporting more schools with this additional Bond Act funding so more students across the state can enjoy healthy, quiet and comfortable rides to and from school each and every day.”

“Paving the way for zero-emission school buses not only cleans our air, it protects the health and wellbeing of our students,” Governor Hochul said. “With increased funding for school to transition to clean transportation options, we are reducing harmful emissions and pollution, helping to ensure that both students and residents are breathing clean, fresh air and enjoying healthier environments to live, work and do business.”

The state of New York mandates that all school buses on the road must be zero-emission by 2035. From 2027, all new school buses purchased must be ZEVs. The state has announced several funding rounds for school districts and operators to finance the new EVs and corresponding charging infrastructure. The city also received 1.5 million dollars from the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation’s Ride and Drive Electric Programme “to support planning and coordination efforts to electrify New York City’s electric school bus fleet.”
