Canada: Manitoba province offers 25 million CAD in EV subsidies

The Canadian province of Manitoba has launched a 25-million-CAD electric vehicle subsidies programme. It covers new and used electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

Manitoba residents will receive 4,000 Canadian dollars (2,667 euros) when purchasing a new electric vehicle. Moreover, the province’s government will subsidise the purchase of a pre-owned EV with 2,500 CAD (1,667 euros).

The programme applies to electric cars bought on or after 1 August 2023 and will run until March 2026. For an EV to qualify, it must be purchased from a dealership in the Manitoba province, located to the east of Ontario. In both cases – for used and new vehicles – the car must cost less than 70,000 CAD. “Used EVs must be less than four years old and incentives for leased vehicles will be proportionate to the length of the lease, with a full incentive for a four-year lease,” the Manitoba government states.

However, lawmakers are willing to make an exception for Tesla. New Tesla cars bought outside of Manitoba are also eligible for the rebate – as long as the Tesla has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of 70,000 dollars or less and was bought between 1 August 2023 and 2 May 2024.

“We know Manitobans want to do their part to help lower emissions and protect our environment, and we want to help them make the switch,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Tracy Schmidt. “This is a win-win for our province. We’re fighting the climate crisis while also lowering costs for families right away with a rebate on EVs and helping them save money every month on their daily commute.”

“We are delivering on our campaign promise to help Manitoba families afford an electric vehicle,” Finance Minister Adrien Sala added. “This is a significant rebate up front and it will help you save money in the long term – even with the lowest gas prices in Canada.”
