UK: char.gy to take over operation of 950 charge points in Richmond and Wandsworth

char.gy will take over the operation of all 950 EV charging points in the UK boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth. This will be done in three phases, with the migration to be finalised in November of next year.

The first phase, involving 399 charge points, was completed at the end of last month. According to char.gy, once the migration has been completed, it will have expanded its network by a third. All charge points are presumable lamppost chargers.

According to the charge point operator, its network currently includes 3,000 charging points. Moreover, it just received a capital injection of 100 million pounds from Zouk Capital to fund its expansion.

“We are proud to have been chosen by Richmond and Wandsworth councils as a partner to serve EV drivers across these London boroughs,” said John Lewis, CEO of char.gy. “This is a UK first and it represents a crucial development in the way EV infrastructure can be rolled out. It offers councils a greater degree of choice in their partnerships with private companies, bringing healthy competition to the market, which ultimately encourages operators to provide the best service possible to both councils and EV drivers.”

The London boroughs of Wandsworth and Richmond recently announced that they would increase the number of lampost chargers. Last year it was said that Ubitricity would roll out a network of 1,050 new 5 kW lamppost chargers in the boroughs. According to the Wandsworth government’s website, Ubtricity will continue as one of the two operators.
