Germany: HEAG mobilo operates more electric buses than diesel buses

With the handover of ten new Mercedes-Benz electric buses, the proportion of electric buses in the HEAG mobilo fleet has risen to around 65 per cent. The transport company from Darmstadt, Germany, now has 49 electrically powered buses in operation.

The new electric buses with the three-pointed star are the new eCitaro G, the articulated bus version of the Mercedes electric bus with the latest NMC battery generation. It gives the articulated buses an energy content of 686 kWh and a range of around 220 kilometres. The vehicles are charged at the Böllenfalltor depot via a plug.

The “Directive for the promotion of buses with alternative drive systems in passenger transport” provided 7.9 million euros to support the expansion of the electric bus fleet and charging infrastructure. The funding decision was made in August 2022, and the federal programme has since ended.

The new eCitaro Gs are part of an order of 19 electric buses that HEAG mobilo placed just over a year ago. While ten units were ordered from Mercedes-Benz, the German company ordered nine units from MAN. The latter arrived in the German city in February.
