Air Products to set up H2 refuelling network in Europe

US manufacturer Air Products has announced plans a network of hydrogen refuelling stations in Europe. It will be located along important transport corridors close to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Air Products does not provide details of the number of hydrogen refuelling stations planned.

It is not yet clear how many stations the network will consist of. That will likely depend primarily on subsidies. According to the company, the stations are intended for fuel cell trucks and buses and “will help ensure reliability and convenience for heavy-duty transportation powered by hydrogen.”

Air Products has already received subsidies from the EU Commission as part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding programme for some existing and planned H2 filling stations in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, as well as from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for two H2 filling stations in Meckenheim and Duisburg.

The latter is part of Mercedes-Benz’s GenH2 customer trials. Air Products is one of the customers testing the fuel cell truck under real-life conditions and for transporting bottled gases. The company says that the truck can refuel at “Air Products’ latest mobile fuelling station in Duisburg.” You can read more about the customer trials and refuelling requirements for the GenH2 truck here.

Air Products says that is not only looking to set up hydrogen networks in Europe. It also recently announced its intention to build hydrogen refuelling station networks from Northern to Southern California in the US and between Edmonton and Calgary in Canada. In both cases, the refuelling stations will cater to heavy- and light-duty FCEVs.

“Each state-of-the-art, high-capacity, high-reliability station will be able to fuel up to 200 heavy-duty trucks or 2,000 cars per day,” said Alison Hawkins, Air Products’ General Manager – Hydrogen for Mobility, Americas, about the plan for California. “These stations will be a key driver to help California on its road to a zero-emissions transportation future.”

For Canada, Rachel Smith, vice president and general manager of Air Products Canada, added: “In Canada, hydrogen is essential to decarbonizing transportation where heavy-duty vehicles travel long distances in extreme temperatures. We are excited to be activating Canada’s first hydrogen corridor here in Alberta.”
