Amazon has 15,000 Rivian delivery vans in the US

Amazon is now using more than 15,000 electric vans from the manufacturer Rivian in the United States. The shipping giant ordered 100,000 of them almost five years ago. The first units are also on the road in Europe, namely in Germany.

Of the 100,000 electric delivery vans ordered from Rivian in 2019, which Amazon began deploying in the US in 2022, around 15,000 have been delivered in the US to date. In Europe, the roll-out is progressing more slowly. Amazon refers to the 300 electric vans from Rivian for Germany mentioned a year ago, but does not provide a new status. The roll-out was announced just over a year ago, primarily for Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf. With regard to Europe, however, Amazon mentions that it intends to invest more than 1 billion euros in the further electrification and decarbonisation of its transport network over the next five years. Electric vans for last-mile deliveries and electric trucks will play a role.

“The investment is also intended to drive innovation across the industry and encourage more public charging infrastructure, which will help enable the broader transportation industry to more quickly reduce emissions,” says Amazon. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. With this in mind, it formed an alliance with Rivian in 2019 to put the aforementioned 100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the road by 2030. The partners have jointly developed and adapted the van to Amazon’s requirements. Features include good all-around visibility for the driver, safety assistants, ventilated seats for quick heating and cooling, automatic door locking and unlocking when the driver approaches or leaves the vehicle and an electrically operated bulkhead door that opens when the driver reaches their delivery location.

In addition to the Rivian vehicles, Amazon claims to have 15 other electric models in its fleet worldwide, including delivery vehicles, e-cargo bikes and e-rickshaws. Amazon needs thousands of chargers to operate this enormous fleet of electric vehicles. As a result, Amazon has become the largest private operator of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the US, as revealed in a Bloomberg report in spring. According to the report, the retail giant has installed more than 17,000 chargers in around 120 warehouses in the US in just over two years. Amazon also relies in part on the expertise of a German company for its charging infrastructure: in the article, Bloomberg mentions the Amazon depot in Maple Valley, Washington. There, 309 chargers from Siemens supply the local Rivian delivery vans with electricity.
