Ecojet orders 22 hydrogen-electric engines from ZeroAvia

The young Scottish airline Ecojet, which plans to start operations at the end of the year, has signed a contract for the purchase of 22 hydrogen-electric ZA2000 engines from ZeroAvia. The engines are to be retrofitted in turboprop aircraft with 40 to 80 seats.

Edinburgh-based Ecojet aims to become the industry’s first all-electric airline, enabling carbon-free living. The airline intends to commence operations with conventionally powered aircraft by the end of 2024, operating routes to and from Edinburgh. Once the technology has been certified, the aircraft will be retrofitted with ZA2000 hydrogen-electric engines.

We’ve moved one step closer by signing an agreement to purchase 22 hydrogen electric engines from ZeroAvia. The airline will initially operate its first zero-emission aircraft with ZeroAvia’s smaller ZA600 engines for aircraft with up to 20 seats. Ecojet’s goal is to build a fleet of larger regional aircraft to serve passengers on key domestic and shorter international routes.

ZeroAvia is working towards a cleaner future of flying for all aviation by enabling electric propulsion. ZeroAvia primarily focuses on developing hydrogen-electric propulsion systems. The company has submitted its first hydrogen propulsion system for certification for aircraft with up to 20 seats and is working on a larger engine for aircraft with 40 to 80 seats.
