GM & Tesla team up to build charging stations in Mexico

The two US-American automotive companies Tesla and General Motors have partnered to construct 1,000 charging points in Mexico. The move is intended to stimulate the development of EVs in the country.

With both US American manufacturers building factories in Mexico, it makes a lot of sense to invest in the market and EV ecosystem locally. For its part, General Motors plans to manufacture electric vehicles from its subsidiaries Chevrolet and Cadillac in Mexico, while Tesla is still gearing up to build its next gigafactory there early next year.

The costs for the charging network have not been disclosed, but GM Mexico President and CEO Francisco Garza explained that the investments are part of a larger $1 billion investment in technological transformation at the manufacturing plant. He added: “We’re committed to being the leader in electric vehicles, that’s our vision.”

Other international manufacturers, such as the Chinese company BYD, also want to build production facilities to serve the North American market in Mexico, however, since the Mexican government is considering cancelling incentives for Chinese manufacturers, the American manufacturers may take the market without a fight.
