The new JV wants to roll out up to 3,000 chargers in both countries in the coming five years. These will be grouped in 300 ‘EV hubs,’ the first of which are already under construction. However, the companies do not mention exactly where.

They do mention that all the hubs “will be in prime locations in and around urban areas and powered by renewable energy provided by SSE and TotalEnergies.” All of the stations will offer 150 kW or more. The goal is to achieve a 20 per cent market share.

TotalEnergies already operates the Source London network comprising 2,600 charge points in the British capital. Moreover, it operates more than 64,000 EV charge points worldwide and plans to “deploy and operate more than 1,000 high-power charging sites for electric vehicles in Europe by 2028.” The oil and energy company is also active in Germany and Spain, for example.

SSE opened its first ultra-rapid charging hub in the Scottish city of Glasgow in 2022. The British utility also announced that it would invest 35 million euros in installing 30 HPC charging hubs in Ireland by 2026.

The planned joint venture is still subject to regulatory approval.

“TotalEnergies is proud to contribute to the development of electric mobility to decarbonise transportation in the UK and Ireland,” says Mathieu Soulas, Senior VP New Mobilities at TotalEnergies. “This is a great opportunity to extend our network in Europe and stake out a key position as a reference high-power charging player.”

“SSE is already playing a leading role in decarbonising the UK and Ireland’s power system, including building the world’s largest offshore wind farm and transforming electricity networks,” adds Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE. “Now, this agreement will help accelerate progress towards a decarbonised transport system too, ensuring the vehicles that keep the economy moving can do so in a more sustainable and efficient way.”
