Jaguar scraps production of five models

British carmaker Jaguar will stop building all but one of its current models by the end of the year, as it looks to become an all-electric brand in 2025. However, profitability also has something to do with the decision.

CEO Adrian Mardell told investors that the five models cut from the production plan have “close to zero profitability.” So, there is really no reason to keep making them. Only the F-Pace midsize SUV will continue to roll off the production line. The latter is available as a combustion engine and a hybrid variant.

British portal Automotive News Europe was the first to report on the move. As previously reported, the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace, currently the brand’s only electric model, will no longer be produced in 2025.

The slow road to electric mobility

The goal is to turn the luxury carmaker into an all-electric brand. Jaguar parent company JLR, owned by Indian Tata Motors,  initially wanted to launch six electric models in the coming years. In February, the carmaker stepped on the brakes, saying it would focus more on plug-in hybrids and that the demand for pure EVs had cooled down. However, the company would still launch four BEVs by 2026.

However, it should be noted that Automotive News Europe, which first reported on JLR slowing down its electric ambitions, now again says the carmaker will launch six electric models—three of which will be Jaguars.

Either way, these battery-electric models include the Range Rover Electric SUV and the electric Range Rover Sport. Both are based on the MLA platform, which supports combustion engines, hybrids and battery-electric drives. Technical data for a BEV model based on this platform is not yet known.

There are also plans for two (or three) electric Jaguar models that will use the BEV architecture JEA, which is short for Jaguar Electrified Architecture. There are also no details about these cars yet. However, JLR’s chief creative officer, Gerry McGovern, reportedly said at investor day: “Imagine something that you’ve never seen before that looks like it’s dropped from the sky – and times [that] by five. That’s how different these Jaguars are going to be.”

Just last month, it was reported that JLR will also use two of Chery’s modular architectures. The first one is called M3X and is dedicated to combustion engine and plug-in hybrid models. The second platform, E0X, was jointly developed by Chery and Huawei. It covers the A to C segment with various body shapes and can be used for purely battery-electric and Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs).

JLR first announced its goal to become a zero-emission car brand in 2021. At the time, the carmaker said that by the decade’s end, an all-electric variant would be available for all JLR model ranges.
