BMW delivers over 100,000 EVs in Q2/2024

The BMW Group sold 190,622 battery-electric cars in the first half of the year. The majority of these were delivered in the second quarter. The year-on-year growth was driven primarily by the core brand.

Of the 190,622 BEVs sold by the BMW Group (+24.6 per cent), 179,557 vehicles were attributable to the BMW brand – and just over 11,000 EVs to Mini and Rolls-Royce. That means that in the first half of the year, the BMW brand grew by 34.1 per cent, outperforming the Group as a whole.

The BMW Group’s BEV sales also grew from the first to the second quarter. The company delivered 82,689 electric cars at the start of the year and 107,933 all-electric vehicles between April and June. After the record quarter at the end of 2023, it is still the second-best quarterly result for electric deliveries for the BMW Group.

Another positive aspect of the half-year results: the EV share of BMW Group’s total sales is rising steadily. In Q2, 17.4 per cent of all vehicles delivered (618,826, -1.3%) were purely electric, a significant increase compared to Q2 2023 (14.1 per cent), but also compared to the first quarter of 2024 (13.9 per cent). The trend in the direction of BEVs is also growing. The 107,933 BEVs outnumbered the 38,550 plug-in hybrids in the second quarter – i.e. a ratio of 74:26 for BEVs to PHEVs.

BMW does not mention an electric model that achieved an outstandingly good result in the second quarter or first half of the year in the press release. Previously, the Munich-based company liked to emphasise the success of individual models. Now it simply states: “For the BMW brand, models from the upper premium segment are becoming increasingly popular with customers, in addition to fully-electric models.” In addition, the availability of the new 5 Series has grown with the 5 Series Touring and the all-electric i5 Touring, which is why the company is “confident” going into the second half of the year – also with the launch of new Mini models.

“In the first six months of the year, we saw double-digit growth of our fully-electric vehicles and models from the upper premium segment,” said Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales. “Despite a challenging market environment, we increased sales for the BMW brand in the first half of the year, thanks to our attractive product portfolio. The strong commitment of our BMW Group employees and our robust global retail network have made a significant contribution in this regard.”
