NASCAR selects ABB as electric mobility partner

The US motorsport association NASCAR has announced an electric mobility partnership with technology group and charging infrastructure manufacturer ABB. The first tangible result of the alliance is the prototype of an electric race car with a peak output of up to 1,000 kW.

The cooperation between the two sides aims to “create strategic opportunities for electrification in the sport, including race vehicles, electrification infrastructure, and energy education,” according to the US subsidiary of Swiss technology group ABB. The partners presented the jointly created prototype at the NASCAR Chicago Street Race 2024. Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota were also involved in the development of the prototype.

According to ABB, the vehicle is a race-tested, electrified stock car with three motors and 1,000 kW peak power – one unit is located at the front and two at the rear. A 78 kWh liquid-cooled battery powers the tunable drivetrain. The tyres are “four specially designed Goodyear Racing Eagle tyres.” Moreover, regenerative braking converts kinetic energy into electricity, making the car ideal for road courses and short oval tracks.

ABB will also become a founding partner of ‘NASCAR Impact,’ a platform for promoting sustainability initiatives in motorsport. The goal is for NASCAR to reduce its own carbon footprint to zero by 2035. With this in mind, ABB will also help the association electrify off the track.

“ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation, and we help customers globally to optimize, electrify and decarbonize their operations,” said Ralph Donati, ABB Executive Vice President. “The objective of the collaboration between NASCAR, ABB in the United States and the NASCAR industry is to push the boundaries of electrification technology, from EV racing to long-haul transportation to facility operations.”

“There could not be a more optimal moment in time to announce our first IMPACT partner than in tandem with the debut of our prototype electric vehicle at the Chicago Street Race,” said Eric Nyquist, NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief IMPACT Officer. “ABB is an industry leader and will help in efforts to decarbonize our operations as we pursue achieving net-zero operating emissions over the next decade.”
