Amplify starts construction of battery cell factory

Amplify Cell Technologies, a joint venture between Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Truck and Paccar, has started the previously announced construction of a battery cell factory for commercial vehicles in Mississippi. Production should kick off in 2027.

The new battery cell manufacturing plant in Marshall County, Mississippi, will be an energy-efficient facility for the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells on a 500-hectare site. The planned annual production is 21 gigawatt hours (GWh). Amplify plans to begin production of these battery cells at the plant in 2027 and is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs in US manufacturing.

“I am thrilled to be here with so many of our partners to break ground on this new battery cell manufacturing facility in Marshall County,” said Kel Kearns, CEO of Amplify. “United in the mission to decarbonise our highways and interstates, our founding partners are making a serious commitment. Marking the start of construction on site signifies this collective effort, and together we will lead the transformation of the commercial transportation industry.”

The new facility will produce LFP battery cells, a cell chemistry chosen for its durability and cost efficiency for electric commercial vehicles. With local production, the partners want to keep transport distances short and benefit from the US subsidy, which mandates local value creation.

Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Truck and Paccar are investing a combined two to three billion dollars in the joint venture, which was announced last year and established in June. They each hold 30 per cent of the shares. EVE Energy, a specialist in the manufacture of LFP battery cells, acts as a technology partner with a ten per cent share and is contributing its experience in the development and manufacture of battery cells to the company.
