Porsche recalls over 30,000 Porsche Taycans in the USA
A total of 31,689 Taycan vehicles are affected by the USA recall. Models from the 2020-2025 model years that were manufactured between October 21, 2019, and June 13, 2024, need repair to the front brakes.
While Porsche says the front brakes may fail as a result of the fault, the performance carmaker said the rear brakes remain unaffected by the fault. US dealers are now to install new front brake hoses, while owners will be reimbursed for repair work already undertaken.
The fault became evident in June last year when the manufacturer began receiving reports of front brake hose leaks, including seven reports in the US. During certain steering and driving conditions the front brake hoses become compressed, and over time, damage the inner fabric layer of the hoses. The inflexibility of the hoses leads to cracks from which brake fluid is lost. If this happens, warning messages will appear on the dash, which could include a notification of ‘Brake Fluid Low’ or ‘PSM Failure’.
In Part 573 of the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, the German luxury sportscar stated that, while Porsche is unaware of any accidents in the US, a crash that happened elsewhere involved a Taycan was travelling at roughly 120 km/h (74 mph) in a 30 km/h (18 mph) zone.
Towards the end of last year, The Guardian highlighted a study of more than 400,000 UK road accidents, showing that drivers of some brands are more often culpable of “risky or aggressive manoeuvres” that played a part in collisions. Reported infringements such as speeding, jumping a red light, overtaking on double white lines or ignoring a pedestrian crossing were more likely to be a factor when a Subaru, Porsche and BMW were involved than a Skoda or Hyundai.
Porsche has said will notify dealers of the recall on July 3, while owners will be notified on August 16. Dealers have been instructed to install new front brake hoses with an increased bending radius, reducing the load on them while driving. Since mid-May, newly manufactured Taycans have been fitted with brake hoses that are no longer subject to the same degree of bending.
