ElringKlinger plans to primarily manufacture battery technology products at the new facility and plans to expand the site into a battery hub for the American market.

In the first stage, the new facility will cover an area of 21,000 m² and will feature additional expansion space. ElringKlinger htne plans to gradually expand the site to become its central battery centre for the North American market. Operation at the battery factory is scheduled to launch by mid-2025. At launch, ElringKlinger will initially manufacture cell contacting systems in Pickens County for an unnamed launching customer.

The choice for the location in South Carolina was made due to its central location between Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, where major automotive production hubs are located. Additionally, “Renowned universities such as the Clemson University ensure a high level of qualification in the regional labor market, especially in the technical field,” ElringKlinger wrote in its press release.

“The new site is the next step for ElringKlinger in the implementation of its SHAPE30 transformation strategy. The American market generally offers great potential for e-mobility applications, and we have already received a first high-volume series nomination,” explained CEO Thomas Jessulat, adding: “When it comes to unlocking this potential, the US state of South Carolina is an optimal starting point for the establishment of the Group’s Battery Center Americas, as yesterday’s talks with Governor McMaster once again underlined.”
