Iberdrola plans 1,000 charging points at Eroski locations

Iberdrola plans to install 1,000 new charging points of different power levels as part of a partnership with Eroski. These will be operational over the next three years at around 300 of the retail chain's locations in eleven autonomous communities in Spain.

The 1,000 new charging points will be installed at workplaces, supermarket car parks and petrol stations in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Navarra and the Basque Country. In the project’s first phase, Eroski petrol stations will be equipped with charging points.

The exact charging capacities of the individual charging points and their distribution across the various locations are not yet known. However, the press release suggests that the charging capacities could range from AC to DC to High-Power Charging. “With this infrastructure, users will be able to charge their car batteries while shopping, with a variety of charger powers that will allow them to charge 100 km from 6 minutes to 45 minutes,” it says.

“Through this agreement with Iberdrola España, we will contribute to creating a quality EV charging network, thus expanding our services available to consumers,” says Javier España, Eroski’s Development Director.

“The Eroski group is a clear ally in advancing the implementation of charging points in places where users go on a daily basis so that they can charge while shopping or while working,” says David Martínez, Director of Iberdrola Clientes España. He added: “This agreement reinforces Iberdrola España’s sustainable mobility strategy and demonstrates the need for collaboration of all the agents involved in the path towards decarbonisation and the improvement of air quality in our cities and municipalities.”

With this project, Iberdrola wants to advance its strategy for the transition to a zero-emission mobility system and its Sustainable Mobility Plan. Launched in 2016, the initiative aims to install 100,000 charging stations in homes, businesses and along public roads by 2025.

Just over a month ago, Iberdrola announced the installation of 2,000 AC charging points at around 450 locations of the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona. According to the agreement, up to 3,500 such charging points are planned at 800 Mercadona locations in Spain and Portugal. According to Iberdrola, it currently has a network of over 50,000 charging points, of which only 6,500 are publicly accessible.
