Kempower gets the green light to start production in the USA
Kempower announced the plant in February last year. In November, the Finnish company received the necessary certification to start production at its new US plant. The Finnish company has now celebrated the opening of the factory, which will produce NEVI-compliant (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) fast chargers for electric cars, electric trucks, electric buses and electric machines for US customers.
Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy said, “Kempower’s efforts complement the U.S. Department of Energy’s work to develop a nationwide EV charging network. By manufacturing and developing advanced charging solutions right here in the United States, Kempower is helping ensure we have the infrastructure needed to support the growing fleet of EVs on our roads.”
North America is an attractive market for the Finnish company and funding programs, such as the multi-billion dollar support program (NEVI) for the development of fast-charging infrastructure along highways, also play a role. In April this year, Kempower announced the market launch of its MSC charger for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles.
Kempower intends to invest around 40 million dollars in the Durham County plant over the next five years. The new plant is expected to create around 300 jobs. Kempower already operates three plants in Finland. With its new US production base, Kempower is closer to its goal of becoming one of the world’s five leading suppliers of direct current charging systems by 2030.
