VW brings the new 86 kWh battery to the ID.7

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.7 GTX as the sporty top model in the range. As with the ID.7 Tourer, the GTX is characterised by its powerful all-wheel drive and larger battery. From Thursday, the new 86-kWh battery will be available to order not only in the GTX versions, but also in the regular ID.7. (UPDATE BELOW)

VW had already announced the 86-kWh battery at the world premiere of the ID.7 in April 2023 – with this battery, the electric saloon was to achieve the much-cited 700-kilometre range. However, only the ID.7 Pro with the familiar 77-kWh battery and a WLTP range of 615 kilometres was initially available to order.
This will change on Thursday, 6 June 2024: From then on, VW customers will not only be able to order the ID.7 GTX as a saloon and Tourer, but also the ID.7 Pro S in both body versions.

The ID.7 Pro S, which has a final WLTP range of 709 kilometres, starts at €58,985, while the ID.7 Tourer Pro S has a WLTP range of 690 kilometres and is available from €59,785. Both models utilise the 210 kW rear-wheel drive. “This means that both ID.7 Pro S versions are entering the range spectrum of models with a combustion engine,” says VW.

The ID.7 GTX saloon, which was also presented, uses the same drive system as the Tourer, which was unveiled in mid-March: As a GTX, the ID.7 is a pure all-wheel-drive vehicle with 250 kW system output. The familiar 210-kW version of the APP550 electric motor remains at the rear, while an 80-kW machine is installed at the front axle. The GTX models also have the new 86 kWh battery in the underbody, which enables a range of 595 kilometres (Saloon) or 585 kilometres (Tourer).

As is usual at VW, the 86 kilowatt-hours are the usable net energy content of the battery. The actual installed capacity is 91 kWh. VW specifies the maximum charging power as 200 kW, which means that ‘in the best case’ 26 minutes should be enough to charge the battery from ten to 80 per cent. AC charging with 11 kW takes just under eight hours for a full charge from zero to 100 per cent.

With the 250 kW all-wheel drive, the most powerful MEB saloon to date is able to accelerate to 100 kph in 5.4 seconds according to VW – a tenth of a second faster than the Tourer. There are no changes to the boot (532 litres in the saloon, 605 litres in the Tourer), and the roof load of the GTX models also corresponds to that of the ID.7 Pro at 75 kilogrammes. VW does not mention a towing capacity in the press release. The known technical data can be found in the table at the end of the article – divided into the saloon and the Tourer.

The visual changes to the saloon correspond to the Tourer version of the GTX: inspired by the GTI combustion engines, the front and rear aprons have been redesigned. For example, the lower front grille has a honeycomb look and the headlights have a GTX-typical light graphic. Otherwise, numerous elements on the body are finished in high-gloss black, which are silver on the other ID.7 variants. Together with the new 20-inch ‘Skagen’ alloy wheels, this results in a sportier look. The interior boasts typical GTX features such as heated seats with red contrasting stitching and perforated GTX lettering in the backrests. Also GTX-specific: the multifunction steering wheel with red centre bar and red topstitching. The GTX also comes with an extensive range of standard equipment.

But all this comes at a price. The ID.7 GTX will be available in Germany starting from 63,155 euros, the ID.7 GTX Tourer from 63,995 euros.
