Lucid Motors is negotiating a drive system supply deal with Hyundai subsidiary Genesis. Should the deal be finalized, Genesis will be using Lucid's high-performance electric drive system in its upcoming sportscar.

After Aston Martin, Lucid Motors could also supply the Hyundai brand Genesis with its high-performance electric drives in the future. According to a South Korean media report, talks between Lucid and the Hyundai Motor Group are currently underway. The Lucid drive is to be used in a sports car of the Hyundai brand Genesis, which is already under development and is to be offered in smaller quantities from 2026.

Aston Martin is using the dual-motor drive unit, the battery technology and the Lucid charging system called ‘Wunderbox’ from Lucid. Aston Martin will use the components in a new BEV platform on which future electric models will be based – from hypercars to sports cars, GTs and SUVs. Aston Martin is reportedly planning its first BEV model for 2025 and says the collaboration gives Aston Martin ‘access to world-leading electric drive technology developed and manufactured exclusively by Lucid’. In addition to the supply, technical support for the integration of Lucid technology into Aston Martin’s vehicle platform has also been agreed.

The information on Genesis’ upcoming electric sportscar model remains sparse, however, a look at Lucid’s specs may reveal some details about the upcoming Genesis. Toward the end of last year, Lucid introduced its Gravity electric SUV, which runs on a 900-volt architecture, can reach a range of up to 440 miles and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The Lucid Air electric sedan, on the other hand, is available in several variants, with the ‘Pure AWD’ having an output of 353 kW, and the ‘Touring’ variant capable of up to 456 kW.

Genesis also recently launched a performance subsidiary named Magma, which presented a series of concept cars.

At the same time, Hyundai Motor Group has appointed Manfred Harrer as Executive Vice President and Head of the newly established Genesis & Performance Development Tech Unit. The business unit reports to the Research and Development Department of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation. Mr Harrer has more than 25 years of experience in the automotive and technology industry, working for brands such as Audi, BMW, Porsche and Apple.

“The appointment of Manfred Harrer as Executive Vice President and Head of the Genesis & Performance Development Tech Unit will greatly benefit Hyundai Motor Group products, enhancing the image and reputation of our mobility brands,” said Heui Won Yang, President of the Hyundai-Kia R&D Division, adding: “As a world-renowned performance vehicle expert, Manfred will contribute significantly to the development of future Genesis luxury high-performance models, as well as our transition to electrification for Hyundai Motor and Kia brands.”
