JLR has trained 20,000 employees and partners in electromobility
As a result of the training initiative, 95 per cent of the technicians at JLR’s global trading partners are now trained for electric vehicles. This figure alone is over 10,000 people. In addition, more than 2,400 production employees from JLR’s UK production facilities participated in the training programme. In addition, almost 3,000 engineers were trained in electrification and around 2,500 in data and digital technology. In addition, more than 4,200 apprentices and trainees from JLR and its trading partners are currently undergoing training.
In addition, 11,000 JLR production employees are currently being trained to build electric cars. JLR has created a further 950 electrification engineering positions in the 2024 financial year, expanding its skills base. With all these measures, JLR is laying important foundations for its Reimagine strategy, which aims to electrify JLR’s luxury brands by 2030 and make JLR carbon-free by 2039.
Accordingly, work to convert the JLR plants to electric vehicle production is also progressing rapidly, which is why the 11,000 JLR production employees mentioned above are being trained accordingly. In future, JLR intends to train at least 15,000 more employees in the areas of production, technology and workshops as part of the programme.
Electrification creates more opportunities for people with different backgrounds. Unlike traditional work on combustion engines, work on electric vehicles is often more process orientated and less focused on intensive manual labour, making it accessible to a wider range of employees, including those with neurological backgrounds.
“I started my career as an apprentice, learning to work with combustion technology and more recently qualified to dismantle high voltage electric vehicle batteries. The transition to EVs presents lots of learning opportunities, shifting from much of the heavy part lifting associated with ICE vehicles, to more process-driven, technology-centred diagnostics work. I hope this shift will encourage more women to follow my path,” said Chloe Taylor, JLR retail technician champion at a JLR dealership in Northampton.
“Our plans to electrify our ultra desirable modern luxury brands are unfolding at speed and I’m delighted with the pace that our Future Skills Programme is readying our talented workforce. We are working to attract and upskill a more diverse array of talent and electrification is opening up new and more attractive opportunities for females such as Chloe, who have previously specialised in ICE technology. The realisation of our Reimagine strategy is dependent on the skill of our people and a more diverse workforce brings additional strength,” says Barbara Bergmeier, JLR Executive Director of Industrial Operations.
