ABB presents drive package for electric buses

ABB has presented a more energy-efficient motor and converter package for electric buses. The individual components of the package are optimally harmonised with each other.

The package combines the compact AMXE250 permanent magnet synchronous motor and the HES580 inverter, the first 3-level inverter on the market for electric buses, according to ABB. The new inverter should enable a longer service life and up to twelve per cent lower motor losses ‘in typical driving cycles’ compared to previous 2-level inverters, ABB wrote.

The HES580 is said to reduce the harmonic losses of the motor by up to 75 per cent, “significantly minimising heat dissipation and maximising energy savings”, according to the press release. In contrast to 2-level inverters, which switch between two voltage levels (DC+ and DC-), 3-level inverters utilise a neutral conductor as a third voltage level. “This addition effectively halves the voltage step during each switching operation, resulting in reduced current ripple and subsequently lower harmonic losses,” explained ABB.

As a result, the AMXE250 motor should also work ‘with improved efficiency’ and offer higher performance under various operating conditions. The AXME250 is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, which is also characterised by its high torque density and quiet operation – important for passenger comfort.

“We’re delighted to bring the first 3-level inverter for electric buses to the market,” said David Segbers, Global Product Manager at ABB’s Traction division. “The motor-inverter package has been designed to work in perfect harmony and will bring significant energy efficiency gains for operators and OEMs alike.”

Fabiana Cavalcante, Global Head of Mobile e-Power at ABB, added: “Electrifying buses in this way is a key part of bringing sustainable, clean public transport that improves the quality of life. We’re thrilled to provide future-proof solutions that helps the industry to meet their sustainability and performance objectives.”
