Lancia makes the electric Ypsilon more powerful

Stellantis brand Lancia has announced the electrically powered Ypsilon HF. The top model, which will deliver 177 kW, will be added to the Ypsilon range in May 2025. The Ypsilon HF is also the forerunner of future high-performance vehicles from Lancia, which will bear the abbreviation HF.

The Lancia Ypsilon is a small car based on the Stellantis e-CMP platform, which was presented in February 2024. The small Lancia rolls off the production line in Spain together with its sister models, Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa Electric. It also adopts the drive technology from these models, combining a 115 kW electric motor and a 54 kWh battery.

The Ypsilon HF, on the other hand, will offer an output of 177 kW. This power level is not entirely new either: in mid-April, Alfa Romeo presented an e-CMP model with an output of more than 115 kW for the first time. The Alfa Romeo Junior, which was still called the Milano at its world premiere, was announced with 115 and optionally 176 kW of power – Lancia is now talking about one kilowatt more, but it is the same technology. The power is not achieved with an all-wheel drive and a second drive unit on the rear axle but is a more powerful version of the familiar electric motor from Stellantis-Nidec on the front axle.

According to Lancia, the Ypsilon HF can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in 5.8 seconds. However, there are changes to the HF beyond the drive. The chassis has been lowered, the track has been widened, and the body will be characterised by “muscular shapes, inspired by the most radical iconic cars that made history for the brand.”

Prices for the Ypsilon HF are not yet known – according to the press release, the top model will launch in a year, so around May 2025. Alfa Romeo has at least promised its 176 kW version of the Junior for June 2024. The standard Ypsilon can be ordered in Italy at prices starting from 34,900 euros; the market launch in other countries is not yet known.

According to the press release, HF versions of the upcoming Gamma and Delta series are also planned, although no details have yet been provided. However, these HF versions do not necessarily have to be purely electric. Alongside the electric Ypsilon HF, Lancia also unveiled the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, a racing car with which the brand intends to return to rallying. This model is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine.

Incidentally, the abbreviation HF stands for ‘High Fidelity.’ An exclusive club was founded under this name at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show, whose members had to have bought at least six Lancia cars. Lancia itself has been using the abbreviation for its sports cars since 1963.
