Specifically, the EX30 is manufactured in Zhangjiakou (Hebei Province), and retails in an attractive price range of 200,800 yuan (25,657 euros) to 255,800 yuan (32,685 euros) in the country. Despite its small dimensions, the Volvo EX30 features a strong and confident exterior, with cues borrowed from the notably bigger and much more expensive Volvo EX90.

The new-look Thor’s Hammer headlights, clean closed shield, funky 19-inch alloy wheels, svelte beltline, short back glass, and technical-looking split vertical tail lamps help the Volvo EX30 appear smart, sporty, and suave. The pure electric urban SUV is available in five nature-inspired colours: Fluorite Yellow, Sea Cloud Blue, Mist Gray, Crystal White, and Agate Black.

Inside, too, the Volvo EX30 speaks class, featuring an elegantly designed dashboard, centre console, and door panels. Vertical AC vents in the dashboard reinstate the model’s SUV body style, while fine sustainable inlays and upholstery materials proudly highlight the model’s eco-friendliness. Depending on the paint option, customers can specify the interior in Zinc Gray, Acacia Blue, Pine Green, or Fog Blue colour. There’s no instrument cluster here, while the infotainment system is a comprehensive unit controlled through a slick 12.3-inch portrait touchscreen.

Volvo Cars offers the EX30 in rear-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive long-range, and dual-motor four-wheel drive high-performance variants. All three variants have the same electronically limited top speed—180 kph. However, other parameters vary depending on the combination of the powertrain and the battery pack.

The base variants employ only one motor, which produces 200 kW (272 PS) and 343 Nm of torque. The former has a 49 kWh LFP battery pack, the latter uses a 66 kWh NMC battery pack. While the EX30 rear-wheel drive takes 5.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph and delivers a CLTC range of 410 km, the EX30 rear-wheel drive long-range takes 5.3 seconds for a 0-100 kph sprint and can travel 590 km on a full charge, also as per CLTC.

The EX30 dual-motor four-wheel drive high-performance variant, as the name indicates, uses two motors, with the additional unit powering the front wheels. Packing 315 kW (428 PS) and 543 Nm of torque, it takes just 3.6 seconds to speed up from a standstill to 100 kph. Its battery pack is the same 66 kWh NMC battery pack from the middle variant, and according to CLTC, this unit lets it cover a distance of 540 km between charging stops.

The 49 kWh LFP battery pack takes six hours for a full charging session with an 11 kW AC home charger, while the 66 kWh NMC unit takes eight hours for the same. Using a 175 kW DC fast charger, it’s possible to go up from 10 to 80% charging level in just 26 minutes in the former’s case and 28 minutes in the latter’s.

Announcing its Q1 2024 results in April, Volvo Cars said by the end of this year, the EX30 will be available in more than 90 countries. It is already available in Germany and electrive recently took the EV for a test drive, read our car review here. In 2025, the company will expand its production to its Ghent plant in Belgium to meet high demand. The Belgian production will cater to European countries and also other global markets.

How is it that the WLTC range is advertised as 460 km, and the Chinese test gives 590 km on the same battery? Someone is being economical with the truth.
