Onvo introduces first electric SUV model L60 in China
Nio has introduced the first model under its new brand Onvo in China – the Onvo L60. Called ‘Le Dao’ in China, the new brand is aimed to produce high-tech EVs at a more accessible price level. Priced from 219,900 yuan, the Onvo L60 isn’t cheap, but it’s considerably more affordable than the Tesla Model Y, its closest rival, the prices of which start at 249,900 yuan. Customer deliveries of the Onvo L60 in China will begin in September.
It may not be instantly apparent from the pictures, but the Onvo L60 is a crossover and belongs to the hot mid-size segment, which the Tesla Model Y dominates globally. Nio has yet to disclose the performance specifications of the L60 and is focusing on efficiency and range at the moment.
The L60 is based on a 900-volt platform and will be available with 60 kWh, 90 kWh, and 150 kWh battery packs that allow it to travel 555 km, 730 km, and more than 1,000 km on a full charge, respectively, as per CLTC. The 150 kWh battery pack, which is a semi-solid state unit, can only be had with the Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription service, as per a report from CarNewsChina. Nio claims the L60 has the lowest energy consumption in its segment – 12.1 kWh/100 km, as per CLTC. To compare, the CLTC energy consumption rating of Tesla’s Model Y is 12.5 kWh/100 km.
Unlike Nio EVs, the Onvo L60 doesn’t have LiDAR for its ADAS functions, possibly to keep the costs in check. However, it does feature a 4D imaging mmWave radar, a perception hardware not included in Nio models. Also part of the L60’s perception hardware are seven 8 MP cameras and four 360° cameras. Inside, a 17.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display with a 13-inch projection area, and an 8-inch rear entertainment system are the technology highlights of the L60.
The L60 is a family car, so Nio has paid a lot of attention to its comfort aspect. The front seats fully recline, allowing their occupants to lie down and rest. The rear passengers can use their backrests as leg support to relax. Even the rear seats can be fully folded down, and be used to put a mattress to sleep.
