US haulage company 4 Gen Logistics drives sustainable goods transport forward
The family-run transport company from Southern California had already deployed a Volvo VNR Electric in 2022 as part of the Volvo LIGHTS project and gained relevant experience with the electric truck. The 41 vehicles ordered in the same year have since been delivered and are now transporting freight in southern California, for example between the Port of Long Beach and distribution warehouses in the region.
“We have more than 15,000 miles on our first Volvo VNR Electric that was deployed in 2022. Driver feedback has been extremely positive and played a crucial role in our decision to invest in additional Volvo VNR Electric trucks to support our commitment to operating a 100% zero-tailpipe emission fleet by 2025,” explained David Duncan, owner of 4 Gen Logistics.
With two driver-shifts per day, 4 Gen Logistics’ electric truck fleet covers up to 240 miles (approx. 386 km) per shift. The Volvo VNR Electric configuration with six batteries has a range of up to 275 miles (approx. 443 km) and achieves an 80 per cent charge in around 90 minutes.
In order to charge its battery-electric heavy-duty fleet, 4 Gen Logistics is building the corresponding charging infrastructure on its property in the port of Long Beach. Once completed and operational, the site will include 60 350 kW charging stations. In addition, 4 Gen Logistics is installing 30 more 350 kW charging stations at its Rialto location in San Bernardino County, California.
To finance its electric fleet, 4 Gen Logistics relied on Volvo Financial Services. “Cost barriers for fleets adopting battery-electric vehicles are a major concern, along with the supporting infrastructure needed to effectively integrate these vehicles into daily operations,” said James Barker, Territory Finance Manager for Electric Mobility at Volvo Financial Services. “By providing resources and support, Volvo Trucks North America and Volvo Financial Services are making the electromobility transition easier for companies like 4 Gen Logistics.”
In addition, 4 Gen Logistics received financial support from California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) grant programme and the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC).
