Farasis to manufacture batteries for electric motorbikes

The Chinese battery manufacturer Farasis Energy has announced the global launch of its 'Standard Electric Motorcycle Battery'. This is a pouch battery with NCM chemistry.

According to Farasis, the ‘Standard Electric Motorcycle Battery’ can be charged from ten to 80 per cent within 15 minutes. The energy density is 25 per cent higher than the industry average. The battery is also designed for an interchangeable system and is not necessarily permanently installed in the vehicle. The lower weight (a saving of 0.5 to 2.0 kilograms compared to today’s batteries) should therefore make it easier to replace the battery packs. To this end, Farasis has also entered into a strategic partnership with the Singapore-based company Moli to promote battery replacement systems.

While the ‘Standard Electric Motorcycle Battery’ can be charged with up to 5C, the maximum possible discharge rate should be 8C. According to the Farasis press release, this should enable electric motorbikes to reach speeds of up to 198 kph and accelerate to 100 kph in 3.3 seconds – although the cell manufacturer does not specify in which motorbike this is to be achieved.

In addition, the motorbike battery should not only be characterised by its peak performance, but also its performance at high temperatures. “Large cell surface area and efficient thermal management minimize temperature rise during high-power discharges, extending high-temperature cycle life,” Farasis wrote. The pouch cells are also said to offer a high level of safety.

However, with the ‘Standard Electric Motorcycle Battery’, Farasis is not necessarily targeting the powerful motorbikes of European manufacturers, which have a displacement of over one litre in the combustion engine sector. The new product was unveiled at the ‘Asiabike Jakarta 2024’ trade fair in Indonesia. The Southeast Asian country is known to be one of the largest two-wheeler markets in the world – but mainly for light motorbikes and scooters.
