Emco takes over insolvent Unu

Unu filed for bankruptcy in November 2023, but continued business operations as part of the insolvency proceedings. The German manufacturer named “increased material and transport costs, higher operational costs and the sharp drop in demand due to inflation” as the reason for the financial trouble.

With the takeover, the insolvency proceedings have been concluded – Emco is already named in the legal notice on the Unu website. Unu insolvency administrator Gordon Geiser says he is “satisfied with the successful conclusion.” Despite an extremely difficult market environment and the insolvency of numerous competitors, it was possible to find a viable solution for all parties involved, according to the press release.

German company Emco – or officially Emco electroroller GmbH – not only builds electric scooters, but also has 480 partner workshops in Germany. Emco Managing Director Gavin von Schweinitz is confident that the market for electromobility will recover. “Unu not only stands for innovation and strong design, but is also a strong and established brand. These attributes are a perfect fit for Emco and we are determined to successfully integrate the Unu brand into our portfolio,” says von Schweinitz. “The reach of a well-known and popular brand like Unu, coupled with our many years of experience in the market, enables us to inspire new target groups.”

Unu was founded by Pascal Blum and Mathieu Caudal and designs its electric scooters in Berlin. The situation for Unu had already deteriorated before the circumstances that led to its bankruptcy in 2023. During the pandemic, for example, Unu had to suspend production for several months and was then also affected by supply problems with semiconductors.

While Unu specialised in a simple and modern design for its scooters, the new owner Emco primarily offers electric scooters with a retro design. Emco also serves mobility sharing companies, vehicle fleets and delivery services.
