Ji Yue presents sporty electric sedan at Beijing Motor Show
The presentation at the Beijing Motor Show was merely a presentation of the body design: no data on the drive system has yet been announced. The press release, which was only published in Chinese, does not contain any information on this and Chinese eMobility media do not appear to have learned any further details at the trade fair.
Ji Yue’s only production model to date, the electric SUV 01, is based on Geely’s SEA electric platform. There is still no statement on the platform for the Jiyue 07 – however, as Geely holds 65 per cent of the joint venture, the use of the SEA is also obvious for cost reasons. However, the Geely platform offers a whole range of possible battery and electric motor combinations. The Jiyue 01, for example, is offered with a 71.4 or 100 kWh battery.
The basic design language of the front end with the headlights and the daytime running light strip as well as the rear lights adapted to the same layout are already familiar from the SUV model. In the Ji Yue 07, however, the flatter front does not appear as powerful, but rather sporty and aggressive. The angular transition from the headlights to the side sills further emphasizes the width and crouched stance.
The side view is significantly less striking: The long and flat hood merges into a flat windscreen. The roofline is curved and ends in a short, fastback-like rear end. Aerodynamics have clearly dictated the shape here, with hardly any independent design elements to be found – from the side, the Ji Yue 07 could easily be mistaken for an electric sedan from Nio, for example.
In addition to the basic shape of the body, numerous details have also been aerodynamically optimized to reduce fuel consumption and increase range. There are no longer any traditional door handles; instead, the doors open automatically at the touch of a small button in the B-pillar. Although there are still classic exterior mirrors, these are supported by numerous cameras. According to Ji Yue, this should result in an overall drag coefficient of 0.198 – one of the few values given by the manufacturer at the model’s premiere.
Ji Yue was once founded under the name Jidu Auto as a joint venture between Geely and the Chinese tech group Baidu (known for its search engine) in 2021. At that time, Baidu still held 55% of the shares, but the joint venture was not granted a production license in China. In contrast, Geely holds 65% of the shares in the new Hangzhou Jiyuyue Automotive Technology Co Ltd with the Jiyue brand – this new company then also received the production license.
