CustomCells applies for EASA certification

CustomCells, a developer of high-quality lithium-ion battery cells, is seeking certification as a design and manufacturing organisation by the European Aviation Union Safety Agency (EASA). The Itzehoe-based company wants to emphasise its ambition to drive forward the electrification of aviation.

CustomCells stated that its mission is to help electrified flight achieve a breakthrough. While the electrification of road transport is making steady progress, a comparable technological change in aviation has yet to materialise. Together with its customers, such as Lilium, CustomCells is driving the transformation towards environmentally friendly, battery-electric drive systems – and, according to the company, aims to pave the way for sustainable and climate-neutral aviation.

Obtaining certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is an important milestone in CustomCells’ journey and, according to the announcement, reinforces its “dedication to excellence, safety, and innovation in designing battery cells that meet the rigorous demands of electric aviation applications”. By meeting the stringent EASA standards, CustomCells aims to provide the aviation industry with battery cells that offer high reliability, performance and safety. As part of the certification process, CustomCells is committing to transparency and collaboration with regulators, industry partners and other stakeholders.

Eric Swedersky, Senior Vice President of Commercialisation at CustomCells, added: “The use of high-performance battery cells enables the next generation of flight – from electric vertical take-off and short take-off aircraft to conventional take-off and landing aircraft. For short distances, the first battery-electric aircraft of this type are already in the starting blocks, equipped with state-of-the-art battery cell technology from CustomCells – including Lilium and VÆRIDION, for example. This opens up a completely new segment of urban and regional mobility. Sustainable, digital and electrically powered eAviation offers innovative solutions for modern mobility requirements. CustomCells is driving this development forward with high-performance, German-engineered battery cells.”

CustomCells is also strengthening its presence in the trade fair and conference season of the e-Aviation ecosystem and is taking part in the Aero Friedrichshafen aviation trade fair this week together with its partner VÆRIDION. The company’s new white paper will also be presented there. Entitled “The Enabler of eAviation: Advanced Batteries for a Cleaner Sky”, CustomCells provides an overview of the status of current developments and shows how its high-performance battery cells will help electrified flight achieve a breakthrough. The whitepaper is available here.
