Maserati launches electric convertible for over £185,000
The drive technology of the new electric cabriolet is familiar from the electric GranTurismo Folgore and therefore offers no surprises. The new model has three motors that deliver a system output of 560 kW and can be briefly increased to 610 kW via boost mode. The battery has a capacity of 92.5 kWh, of which 83 kWh can be utilised. The range is specified as 419 to 447 kilometres. Maserati is asking €206,713 as the base price for the GranCabrio Folgore. This is around 6,000 euros more than Maserati charges for the GranTurismo Folgore (from 200,592 euros). The Grecale Folgore electric SUV comes with different technology and in a lower price segment (from 124,301 euros).
A look at the technical details reveals that, like the GranTurismo, the new electric convertible is based on an 800-volt platform and houses three 300 kW electric motors – two at the rear and one at the front. Torque vectoring is used to distribute the drive torque in the trio of units, whereby the front motor can also be switched off when it is not needed. However, it is definitely needed when the acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 2.8 seconds is required. According to Maserati, the battery-electric convertible is certainly capable of this. The top speed is stated as 290 kph.
The manufacturer has installed the 92.5 kWh battery in a T-shape, filling the centre tunnel, which the electric model carries as an offshoot of the combustion-powered convertible available under the Maserati roof. As with the electric GranTurismo, the charging capacity is up to 270 kW DC thanks to the 800-volt architecture, meaning that the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 per cent within 18 minutes. The manufacturer puts the AC charging capacity at 22 kW.
The Italian company’s electrification offensive, which runs under the label Maserati Folgore (Italian for lightning), is slowly gathering pace. The first two BEV models, the GranTurismo Folgore and Grecale Folgore, have been available in several EU countries since the end of January. Following on from the electric cabriolet offshoot, the MC20 Folgore is set to follow next year. A further electric SUV has then been announced for 2027 and the Quattroporte Folgore electric saloon for 2028. The latter was actually planned for 2025, but development was apparently halted. According to the Italian media, the entire business model for the electric saloon is in question. In an official communication on the latest status of its electrification roadmap, Maserati announced the electric successor to the Quattroporte for 2028, three years later than previously planned. From 2028, Maserati intends to sell only electric cars – which is two years earlier than previously announced.
Maserati believes more than ever in the electric mobility of the future and is currently organising itself in all areas to improve its competitiveness and meet the needs of new luxury consumers, Maserati commented on its plans in January. In the words of Davide Grasso, CEO of Maserati: “Driven by our Modena heart, we are going full throttle to lead change on electrification, with two of our iconic models already available for purchase in their 100% electric versions, and another on the way this year. We will offer our preferred customers the most powerful Maseratis ever, pushing the boundaries of driving pleasure to a new era. With our long-term strategic vision and plan, we want to make a mark in the luxury world with unique Italian manufacturing excellence, constantly pushing distinctive quality and building our future with a dedicated business model that guarantees our customers the best products that reflect the Trident’s values.”
