Voith launches subsidiary for hydrogen storage systems
Voith has developed a ready-to-install Plug & Drive H2 storage system for heavy-duty vehicles. The integrated 700-bar hydrogen tanks have had the road approval required for marketing in Europe since December 2023. The special feature here is that Voith relies on 700 bar pressure, as 350 bar is actually common in heavy-duty commercial vehicles with a cheaper and more robust technology (on the vehicle and filling station side). However, the trend is towards solutions with higher energy density, which is why Voith favours 700 bar and Daimler Truck even prefers deep-cooled, liquid hydrogen.
Voith itself claims to have more than ten years of experience in the field of hydrogen tanks – and also to be an expert in carbon composite materials. “Through the new company, Voith is pooling the know-how of both sectors to fully exploit the possibilities of hydrogen technology and contribute to the decarbonization of heavy-duty transport,” the company wrote.
“With the founding of Voith HySTech GmbH, we can serve the growing customer requirements in a targeted manner and leverage the existing growth potential in the hydrogen sector with our broad expertise,” said Toralf Haag, CEO of Voith.
Voith employs around 22,000 people at over 60 locations worldwide, however, it is not specified how many of them work for the new Voith HySTech GmbH in Garching. The portfolio includes systems, products and (digital) services for the energy, paper, raw materials and transport & automotive industries. Founded in 1867, the company is still family-owned and most recently recorded sales of €5.5 billion.
