Polestar 4 SUV debuts in North America

Polestar presented its Polestar 4 at the New York International Auto Show ahead of starting sales in North America from late April 2024. The first units will be delivered to US customers in Q4/2024.

In the US, the all-electric SUV starts at $54,900 for the Long range Single motor and $62,900 for the Long Range Dual motor with standard Pilot Pack. In any drive configuration, the battery contains 102 kWh.

According to the EPA cycle, the Long range Single motor variant with rear-wheel-drive has “a preliminary range target of over 300 miles.” That translates to about 483 km EPA range. The dual-motor-version has an EPA range of 2070 miles or 435 kilometres. However, as mentioned, these figures are preliminary and will be confirmed at a later date.

The model is based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which has formed the basis for numerous electric vehicles in recent years. From the platform, the Polestar 4 takes over the permanently excited synchronous motors; in the dual motor, or AWD version, these come with a system output of 400 kW and a torque of 686 Nm. The single-motor variant with rear-wheel drive delivers 200 kW of power and 343 Nm of torque. All variants can be charged with up to 200 kW DC.

The Polestar 4 sits in the D-segment, and with a length of 4.84 metres and a width of 2.14 metres, it is no small car. The vehicle was designed as an SUV coupé from the outset rather than derived from an SUV model and is 1.54 metres high on a wheelbase of 2.999 metres. According to the company, there should be no compromises in rear headroom; there are also adjustable seats in the rear.

One of the most striking features of the Polestar 4 is the lack of a rear window – the Polestar 5 saloon will also do without. CEO Thomas Ingenlath described “a virtual rear window with world-class digital rear-view mirror”.

“Debuting Polestar 4 to the North American market on a stage such as the New York International Auto Show is a significant milestone for our brand,” said Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar North America. “Polestar 4’s innovative SUV coupe design offers the best of both worlds for those seeking the ultimate driving performance without sacrificing occupant comfort and a captivating exterior design. Together with Polestar 3, we transition from a one-car to a three-car company, with two luxury SUVs arriving this year.”

Production and first deliveries of the Polestar 4 kicked off in China at the end of 2023. And the electric SUV went on sale in Europe and Australia in January, with deliveries said to start in August this year. As for the global markets, Polestar will reportedly supplement production of the Polestar 4 in China by contract manufacturing by Renault Korea Motors in South Korea from the second half of 2025 to serve the North American and South Korean markets.

Polestar drivers in North America can also use Tesla’s Supercharger network. The carmaker will offer adapters from spring before delivering its EVs with NACS in North America from 2025.

Update 25 April 2024

The Polestar 4 has now officially hit the market in the United States. Following the start of production and first deliveries in China at the end of 2023 and the start of sales in Europe and Australia in January 2024, online sales begin today in the USA with a starting price of $54,900.

There are currently 8 variant options in the lineup, ranging from the ‘Long range Single Motor’ variant at the above-mentioned $54,900 to the range-topping ‘Long range Dual motor w/ Plus and Performance Pack’ which starts at $72,900.

Production for North America is planned to start in the third quarter of 2024, with first customer deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of 2024.
