Stockholm public transport company invites tenders for 380 electric buses

Stockholm's public transport company SL will soon launch three tenders for a total of 380 new electric buses, which will go into service in the Swedish capital and surrounding municipalities from 2026. There are currently only 29 electric buses on the road in the SL area.

The tenders now planned by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (or SL for short) for 380 additional electric buses will ensure that all public transport buses in the city and several surrounding municipalities in the Stockholm region will be electric from 2026. As the Swedish trade magazine bussmagasinet.se writes, around a third of the SL fleet will be converted to zero-emission drives by then.

The first tender concerns bus operations in Järfälla and Upplands-Bro. The contract for these two areas, which is currently awarded to Nobina, expires in August 2026. The second tender covers bus services in Södertälje and Nykvarn. The third tender covers Stockholm city centre and the island of Lidingö between Stockholm and the province of Uppland. That tender has currently been awarded to Keolis.

SL had already converted to EVs for other areas in the past, which is why more vehicles will be added to the current 29 in 2024. This autumn, operator Keolis will put another 190 electric buses on the road in Solna, Sundbyberg, Sollentuna and Bromma. Next winter, Nobina will put 200 electric buses into operation in Nacka, Värmdö, Huddinge, Botkyrka and Söderort.
