Stellantis reduces working hours at Mirafiori plant due to weak demand
Automotive News Europa reported this with reference to a statement from the Italian trade union UILM. A Stellantis spokesperson allegedly confirmed the continuation of a single-shift operation. Short-time working at the plant has been in place since 12 February. It was initially scheduled to last until 3 March but has since been extended until 30 March and now until 20 April. More than 2,200 employees are affected. In the current week, the plant even shut down completely.
One reason for the weak demand for the electric Fiat 500 could be the purchase subsidy announced in Italy, which is not yet available. At the beginning of February, the government announced it would reserve almost one billion euros in funding for “clean vehicles” for 2024. In extreme cases, the eco-bonus can amount to up to 13,750 euros. Interested buyers are thus waiting for the purchase premium to be available – and are postponing their EV purchases accordingly.
Meanwhile, to improve Mirafiori’s capacity utilisation, Stellantis is reportedly considering building up to 150,000 low-cost electric cars per year from Chinese partner Leapmotor in Turin from 2026 or 2027, which will then be sold by Stellantis’ European dealers.
