Solaris gives Urbino 12 electric battery update for a good 600 kWh
According to the Polish manufacturer, the new Solaris Urbino 12 no longer houses a motor tower but now has a “modular drivetrain” with components on the roof and at the rear. It allows all elements on the roof to be better arranged and the passenger compartment to be upgraded. Therefore, the new Urbino 12 electric bus now offers up to 41 seats, seven more than the previous version. Solaris is not commenting on the drive power. The Urbino 12 electric has been offered with a 200 kW or 160 kW asynchronous motor or a ZF electric portal axle with 2 x 125 kW.
There are also changes to the battery. Solaris speaks of “new-generation batteries” but provides no further details on the key data characterising the new battery. Only the maximum total energy content of over 600 kWh for ranges of more than 600 kilometres is specified. Previously, a maximum of 520 kWh was possible in the Urbino 12 electric; before 2022, it was up to 395 kWh. ICPT continues to act as the battery supplier. The Polish supplier produces the ready-to-install battery systems for Solaris but not the battery cells they contain. These are sourced from well-known cell manufacturers; since 2022, for example, there has been a supply agreement for LFP cells from CATL.
The total passenger capacity is now 94 people (mind you, combined with the smallest battery option of 300 kWh), corresponding to a permissible total weight of 19.5 tonnes. In France, Italy and Spain, the regulations allow 20 tonnes to transport six more people.
The Urbino 18 electric articulated version with a modular drivetrain and improved batteries was unveiled at the Busworld trade fair in the autumn of 2023. It has an energy content of up to 800 kWh and an output of up to 240 kW. Up to 145 passengers can now be transported on the Urbino 18 electric (with a total weight of up to 29 tonnes).
