ADL will deliver 33 electric buses to Seattle
The Enviro500EV for Sound Transit will be the first Alexander Dennis bus in North America to utilise the manufacturer’s next-generation technology platform. It includes an electric drive system from Voith and increased battery capacity. The manufacturer does not get any more specific. The previous version of the 45-foot Enviro500EV has a passenger capacity of up to 82 seats, including 53 on the upper deck. It has two axle-mounted motors with 125 kW peak each. The battery capacity was 648 kWh.
And there is another first for the North American market. In addition, the buses will be able to charge inductively while on-route, thanks to technology from InductEV (formerly Momentum Dynamics). The system comprises modules or pads rated at 75 kW. By combining multiple pads, the modules can deliver up to 300-450 kW per bus.
The electric double-deckers will be built in the USA by partner Big Rig Manufacturing at the latter’s production facility in Las Vegas. In September 2023, Alexander Dennis announced a deal with the contract manufacturing partner to help supply its diesel and its electric variant of the Enviro500 to Canada and the US.
It is not Sound Transit’s first electric double-decker. The operator already has 50 Enviro500in its fleet, servicing express routes out of Everett. The new buses will be used for the new Stride bus rapid transit (BRT) along Interstate 405.
“We are excited to once again be working with our long-standing customer Sound Transit in the Puget Sound region who have selected our Enviro500EV with next-generation technology for their new Stride bus rapid transit service,” says Stephen Walsh, Vice President for Alexander Dennis in North America. “This award highlights the resurging demand for our double-deck buses in North America following the relaunch of Buy America-compliant production with Big Rig Manufacturing.”
