According to TotalEnergies and Wenea, these charging parks are located on major motorways and in urban and peri-urban areas in all 17 regions of Spain.

The companies added that they were pursuing discussions to establish a strategic partnership to build and invest in high-power charging hubs.

TotalEnergies aims to deploy and operate more than 1,000 high-power charging sites for electric vehicles in Europe by 2028. In Spain, the company won one of three public roadside charging concessions in Madrid in May 2023. This announcement also comes a few weeks after a tender win in Germany to install more than 1,100 high-power charge points.

Wenea was also awarded a sizeable public tender in Spain, namely in Sevilla, and more than five of the main tenders in the UK. The company claims to operate over 1,200 charging points and plans to expand its network to more than 5,000 charging points in Spain and the UK by 2026, including 2,000 HPC chargers.

As for merging the businesses, Total has yet to disclose when the Nordian acquisition will be complete and name the investment volume.

“We are pleased to acquire this nationwide network of fast and ultra-fast charging points and are willing to build a solid partnership with Wenea,” said Mathieu Soulas, Senior VP of New Mobilities and Marketing at TotalEnergies. He added that this was “a great opportunity to extend our network in Europe and stake out a position as a benchmark high-power charging player in Spain”.

José Manuel Zorrilla, President of Wenea, called it “a leadership race to serve millions of customers country by country”. He believes the new agreement represents “a winning proposition”.

TotalEnergies employs 1,700 people in Spain. It is the fourth provider of electricity and gas to homes and SMEs in the country, with more than two million contracts for gas, electricity, and related services.
