Successor to the Opel Crossland is called Frontera
However, there is no direct relationship between the Crossland and the old Frontera. The Crossland is a B-segment SUV that succeeded the small Meriva van. The Frontera, on the other hand, was an off-road vehicle built in two generations and measuring just under 4.65 metres in length. The Frontera was thus the Opel Grandland’s predecessor, whose name will be retained. However, there was also a three-door version of the Frontera called the Frontera Sport, which, at around 4.20 metres in length, can certainly be classified in the Crossland segment.
According to Opel, the battery-electric versions of the new Frontera and the new Grandland will launch this year – a Grandland successor based on the STLA Medium and a new Crossland had been expected for 2024 anyway. However, Opel has yet to reveal any details apart from the name and silhouette of the model. Initial information and images should be available in the coming weeks.
The current Crossland is based on the PSA/Stellantis CMP platform. However, it is anything but certain that the electric successor will be based on the e-CMP, as Opel already offers a small EV SUV with this drive technology in the form of the Mokka Electric. The CMP Smart Car, presented in October 2023 with the Citroën ë-C3, would also be conceivable – the Crossland could then be positioned as an inexpensive and practical alternative with LFP batteries. A larger version of the 4.01 metre-long ë-C3 and offshoots from other brands have already been announced – it may also be the successor to the 4.22 metre-long Opel Crossland.
A sentence in the current Opel press release also points to the more affordable CMP Smart Car. “The newcomer will also continue Opel’s long-standing tradition of bringing affordable mobility to a wide range of customers by being offered at an attractive price,” it says. And attractive prices are more likely to be possible with the CMP Smart Car and LFP batteries, as the ë-C3 shows. In addition, the new Opel Frontera “will come with a high level of space and versatility.”
CEO Florian Huettl explains why Opel is reviving the model name from bygone GM days: “The name ‘Frontera’ is ideally suited to our new exciting SUV model. It will have a confident character and be positioned right in the core of the market.”
