US grants about $150 mn to repair charging stations
The 24 awards are located in 20 States and were awarded to 14 State Departments of Transportation and ten local entities.
With built-out infrastructure, California received over 63 million to repair over 1300 ports; Washington State will maintain 506 charging stations with funding of over 10 million dollars; Oregon also received about 10 million for over 400 ports, while New York State scored 13 million to repair 335 ports.
The Biden-led government announced the measure to approve the reliability of electric vehicle chargers last September, budgeting $100 mn.
The US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration said at the time that, based on initial estimates of non-operational chargers, the funding will “likely cover the repair or replacement costs of all eligible projects, which will be awarded through a streamlined application process.” Today’s announcement totals grants of over 148 million dollars.
Public and privately owned chargers were eligible given the public had unrestricted access.
The ‘Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator’ is part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program that was newly created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. NEVI is a $5 billion program administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and supported by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation to help States build out EV charging.
Today’s funding directly complements larger-scale investments made by the Biden-Harris Administration and private companies to construct new charging stations, according to the DfT.
US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg added, “These grants bring us another step closer to a national EV charging network that keeps up with the EV transition that’s well underway.”
