German Ruhrbahn orders 19 fuel cell buses from Solaris
Delivery of the hydrogen fuel-cell buses is planned for 2024 and 2025. As reported, Ruhrbahn intends to convert its bus fleets in Essen and Mülheim completely to hydrogen buses by 2033.
So far, the Urbino 18 Hydrogen has only been out since September 2022, when the articulated bus premiered at the third ‘Solaris Talks’ event. At the beginning of the presentation, CEO Javier Calleja explained that as a market leader, Solaris had been timely in reacting to the increasing demand for buses of this type with the 18-metre Urbino Hydrogen
The vehicles delivered by this order will mark the first FCEV buses on Essen’s roads, as Olivier Michard, Member of the Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Solaris Bus & Coach explains: “We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to supply Essen with the latest hydrogen vehicles, which will not only enhance passenger comfort but also represent a new stage in the transformation of the transportation industry. I am delighted that Ruhrbahn has decided to take this strategic step for the transformation of the transport industry and that together we can shape a more sustainable future with an emphasis on innovation and ecology.”
Solaris’ hydrogen buses seemed to grow popular over 2023: Just recently in November, Solaris confirmed an order for 20 Urbino 12 Hydrogen buses to Wałbrzych in its native Poland. The German city of Krefeld had also ordered the fuel cell buses in October. This was also just preceded by a fuel cell module follow-up order with Ballard, which was preceded by another order in August. In the meantime, Solaris had also received FC bus orders from Barcelona, as well as the framework for a major order from Italy.
