BYD launches luxury sedan with 960 kW
Each of the drive units is said to deliver 240 kW, while the system output is stated in the reports on the approval application as 960 kW – in other words, simply the sum of the four motors. This means that the battery should be able to deliver such a high output, at least for a short time. There is little information on the battery itself so far. What is clear is that it is an LFP cell chemistry and that the battery is produced in-house. The energy content is not yet known. However, the portal Car News China writes, for example, that the U7 should also be able to use the 80 kWh pack of the Yangwang U9. In the luxury segment, a larger battery option is also likely in order to be able to offer a competitive range with the large and heavy vehicle.
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regularly publishes a catalogue of new and upcoming vehicle models so that Chinese consumers can form their own opinions and make comparisons using the standardized information on the models. As a result, a great deal of data is often made public before the manufacturer presents the vehicle itself. This is also the case with the Yangwang U7: prices are said to be in the region of one million yuan (currently equivalent to just under 129,000 euros).
The U7 is reportedly 5.265 meters long, 1.998 meters wide (excluding exterior mirrors) and 1.517 meters high. At 3.16 meters, the wheelbase is within the usual range for a luxury saloon of this size and promises ample legroom for the occupants. The size of the vehicle and the (presumably also over 100 kWh) battery are reflected in its weight: the vehicle weighs 3,095 kilograms. On the other hand, the aerodynamics of the body are said to be very good, with the MIIT stating a drag coefficient of 0.195 – although the exact frontal area is not specified.
Little is known so far about the equipment of the luxury model. The Yangwang U7 is said to have a panoramic sunroof, an electric spoiler and a lidar unit integrated into the roof. There will also be options such as digital rear-view mirrors. None of this is considered groundbreaking in this price range. It is possible that BYD will present further features at the actual premiere of the model.
BYD presented its luxury brand Yangwang in January 2023. The brand’s first model, an off-road SUV called Yangwang U8, was launched on the Chinese market last year. It is not yet known whether BYD will also export its Yangwang electric vehicles in the future.
