Alexander Lutz is the new Managing Director Europe at Lucid Motors
Lutz comes from Polestar, where he was responsible for business in Germany until April 2022 and then for the Italian market. The German will succeed Michael van der Sande as Managing Director Europe. Van der Sande only took up the position in March 2023.
Lutz announced the move to Amsterdam himself on LinkedIn. Lucid Motors has yet to issue a press release on the appointment, so the reasons for van der Sande’s departure after less than a year are unknown.
Lutz did not comment on his new role in a post. He merely updated his employer in his CV. The description states that he reports directly to the COO – Lucid only created this management position at the end of 2023 and filled it with German Marc Winterhoff. Lutz also states in his profile that he will drive forward the company’s mission “of inspiring sustainable energy adoption and continuously challenging the conventional landscape in the automotive industry.”
As there is no press release yet, Lutz’s exact responsibilities in Amsterdam are not yet known. However, he has experience in developing and establishing new brands. After holding positions at Audi and Maserati, Lutz became the first German head of Polestar in 2019, i.e. before the market launch, and built up the brand in Germany. After moving to Italy within Polestar, he was responsible for promoting the brand there and increasing sales.
Lucid currently only offers one model, the Air luxury saloon. However, the Gravity SUV is set to follow this year. Lucid missed its sales target of 10,000 vehicles for 2023. It built only around 8,400 Air and delivered 6,000 units. The carmaker will present its full financial results on 21 February 2024. However, Lucid has reported heavy losses in the first three quarters, which is why CFO Sherry House left the company in December.
