Iveco to deliver 411 electric buses to Rome

The public transport operator Atac in Rome has awarded Iveco the contract for its procurement of 411 electric buses, which was put out to tender in July 2023. For the Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer, this is the largest electric bus order from Italy to date.

According to Iveco, the order is worth more than 300 million euros. It not only involves the delivery of the electric buses, but also maintenance over a period of ten years.

In detail, the Italian manufacturer will produce 396 electric 12-metre buses and 15 articulated electric buses with a length of 18 meters for the public transport operator Atac. However, Iveco does not provide any details on the technical data in the brief announcement.

However, the 411 electric buses will not reach the Italian capital in one sitting. Instead, there is mention of an initial delivery by the end of 2024, however it does not cite an exact number. The remaining electric buses should then arrive in Rome by mid-2026.

Last July Atac put the procurement of the 411 electric buses out to tender. After two failed attempts to procure fuel cell buses, battery electric vehicles were to form the backbone of public transport in the Italian capital.

The tender comprised two lots for a total of 396 electric 12-metre buses and a third lot for 15 articulated electric buses with a length of 18 meters. The first lot has a total value of 149.5 million euros for the delivery of 202 12-meter buses as well as their maintenance and service, a lump sum for additional kilometres and security fees. The second lot, also for the procurement of electric solo buses, is worth 143.5 million euros for 97 vehicles, maintenance, a lump sum for additional kilometres and security fees. The 15 articulated buses from lot 3 will cost 14.1 million euros including maintenance and the aforementioned services.
