Yutong delivers 214 electric buses to Santiago de Chile
The 214 new electric buses from the Chinese manufacturer will replace old orange-coloured diesel buses currently used in San Bernardo, El Bosque, La Pintana and La Cisterna.
However, the short press release does not provide any information on the models used or even the technical specifications of the battery-electric buses. Instead, several safety features are emphasised. Not only in terms of the drive, battery and electronics but also with regard to cameras and safety sensors to prevent accidents.
Incidentally, this is not the first time electric buses from Yutong have reached the Chilean capital. The Chinese company delivered electric EV buses to Santiago de Chile at the beginning of 2019, fulfilling an order from 2018. In addition to Yutong, BYD provides electric buses to Santiago de Chile. A further 150 units from the Chinese manufacturer reached Santiago de Chile in the summer of 2020, for example, bringing the total number of electric buses to 455.
However, the largest share of 2,400 electric buses in the capital is attributable to a third Chinese manufacturer. At the end of 2022, Foton reported an order for 1,022 electric city buses.
At the end of 2018, the Chilean Ministry of Transport introduced a new quality standard for urban transport, repeatedly prompting orders for EVs in recent years. However, the 2,400 electric buses will not be the end of the story. A tender for 1,200 more electric buses has already been launched.
