Mercedes launches sales for the updated eSprinter
List prices for the new eSprinter panel van in Germany with the 56 kWh battery start from 59,990 euros net or 71,388.10 euros gross. More relevant than the net price, however, is the leasing rate, as according to Mercedes-Benz Vans, up to 80 per cent of electric vans are leased. Here, the new eSprinter panel van starts with a monthly leasing rate of 690 euros. The offer includes a special leasing payment of just 39 euros, a term of 48 months and 20,000 kilometres per year.
The company only states the base price for the 56-kWh model and the example leasing rate in the announcement for the order launch. The price of the eSprinter with the 113-kWh battery for a range of 440 kilometres according to WLTP is not mentioned. At the time of publication of this article, the new models are not yet listed in the online configurator, where only the old eSprinter can be configured.
A variant with 81 kWh will follow “soon”, according to Mercedes. In addition, the new eSprinter will also be available as an open model for the first time at a later date. Until now, the electric Sprinter was only available as a panel van, as it was primarily suitable for use in the CEP sector due to its low range. With the larger batteries, more applications will be possible in the future.
Although there are no changes to the body itself, the technology underneath is completely new. The revised eSprinter is based on a new concept consisting of three modules: The front module, the underbody with a high-voltage battery and the rear module. The electric motor is integrated into the rear module. This is available in two power levels, 100 or 150 kW peak, and offers a torque of up to 400 Newton meters.
According to the manufacturer, this enables “the greatest possible freedom in the development and design of various extensions and bodies, which were previously only known from the conventionally powered Sprinter.” For example, the electrically driven rear axle makes it possible to offer open-top models in addition to the classic panel van.
Incidentally, the batteries are LFP cells, which do not require materials such as nickel and cobalt. Regardless of the battery size, the maximum DC charging power is 115 kW, which is why the charging time from ten to 80 per cent varies between 28 and 42 minutes. An onboard charger with 11 kW is installed for AC charging; the charging time (from 0 to 100 per cent) is between 5:30 and 11 hours, depending on the battery.
“With its versatility, a new generation of infotainment systems and enhanced safety- and assistance systems, the Sprinter continues to be the perfect overall system solution for a wide range of commercial transport and mobility requirements,” says Andreas Zygan, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Development. “Meanwhile, the new eSprinter impresses with its efficiency, range and load volume. In doing so, it also underscores the Group’s claim to leadership in electric mobility in the commercially oriented segment.”
