Across all drive types, Volkswagen achieved total sales of 9.24 million vehicles in 2023 – an increase of 21 per cent compared to 2022. The 771,100 fully electric vehicles delivered worldwide represent a more dynamic increase – namely by 34.7 per cent or a good third compared to the previous year. The share of all-electric vehicles in deliveries thus increased slightly to 8.3 per cent – compared to 6.9 per cent in 2022.

In Europe, the BEV share remains the highest at 12.5 per cent. The Group delivered 472,400 electric vehicles in Europe (compared to 3,774,500 deliveries of vehicles with all drive types). In the previous year, the BEV share was 11.2 per cent. According to the Group, it was, therefore, “once again the BEV market leader [in Europe] and gained market share in this segment”.

In North America, in particular, VW sold significantly more electric cars than in the previous year. In the USA alone, the Group delivered a total of 731,100 vehicles, 71,000 of which were purely electric. This corresponds to a growth of 60.8 per cent compared to 2022. The momentum is also reflected in the share of battery-electric vehicles in total sales: This rose from seven per cent (2022) to ten per cent (2023) in the USA.

VW has also published concrete figures on electric car sales in China. According to these figures, a total of 191,800 fully electric models were handed over to customers there in 2023 (compared to 3,594,500 deliveries across all drive types). This corresponds to an increase of 23.2 per cent compared to the previous year and a BEV share of 5.9 per cent of deliveries. This is exactly one percentage point more than in 2022. China is also the only market for which the Group publishes sales figures for individual models. Accordingly, 75,700 units of the ID.3 and 61,7000 of the ID.4 electric SUV were delivered.

The most successful all-electric Group models worldwide in 2023 were the VW ID.4/ID.5 (223,100), VW ID.3 (140,800), Audi Q4 e-tron incl. Sportback (111,700), Skoda Enyaq iV incl. Coupé (81,700), Audi Q8 e-tron incl. Sportback (49,000), Cupra Born (45,300), Porsche Taycan incl. Turismo (40,600) and VW ID. Buzz incl. Cargo (28,600).

In addition to deliveries to customers by market, the Group also reports deliveries of fully electric vehicles by brand. As reported, the core brand Volkswagen Passenger Cars accounts for the lion’s share with 393,700 BEVs. However, the commercial vehicle division (VWN) recorded the greatest growth. From January to the end of December 2023, the Group delivered 29,300 commercial vehicles to its customers. Compared to the 7,500 units from the previous year, this corresponds to growth of 288 per cent.

The Skoda brand delivered a total of 81,700 electric cars (+52.1%), while Seat/Cupra handed over 45,300 electric vehicles to its customers (+44.3%). The Audi brand also recorded a 51 per cent increase in BEV deliveries to 118,200 vehicles. This corresponds to around 6.2 per cent of the brand’s total vehicle deliveries. Porsche sold 40,600 electric vehicles, which accounted for around 12.7 per cent of total deliveries (320,200).

The results for electric buses and trucks were mixed. MAN handed over 1,090 electric trucks to customers (+13.0%) and the Navistar brand recorded an increase of almost 151 per cent with 670 electric vehicles. Volkswagen Truck & Bus only delivered 90 electric vehicles last year (-62.8% compared to 2022). Scania also delivered ten fewer e-vehicles in 2023 (-6.1%), specifically 250 units. The company recorded an increase of 13.3 per cent in sales of all drive types.

“We are pleased with the market success of our strong brands and models. It is positive that all major brands and all regions are growing. We are resolutely driving forward the transformation,” says Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group. “In 2023, we delivered 35 per cent more all-electric vehicles to customers. We are also well positioned this year with numerous attractive new products despite ongoing challenges.”
