Chinese manufacturers Yutong and BYD have been awarded the contract for two electric bus tenders for the Italian cities of Bari and Taranto. Yutong is to supply 99 electric buses between 11.5 and 13 metres in length to Bari. As reported, Bari is procuring a total of 135 electric buses by 2026 and had previously ordered 23 vehicles with a length of 9.5 metres from Iveco and 13 buses with a length of 10.5 metres from Industria Italiana Autobus. The order for the remaining 99 e-buses has now been placed with Yutong. Meanwhile, the city of Taranto, which, like Bari, belongs to the Italian region of Apulia, is procuring 45 electric buses with a length of 18 metres from BYD, as well as 67 charging stations for them.

According to a report in the Italian bus trade journal Autobusweb, it remains to be seen which model Yutong will deliver to southern Italy. The well-known E12 and the newer U12 model are being discussed – but “most likely” it will be the E12. The only thing that is clear is that the order is worth 42.8 million euros. The financing is supported by EU funds from Italy’s recovery and resilience plan PNRR (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza).

The city of Taranto, which, like Bari, belongs to the Italian region of Apulia, is now procuring 45 electric buses with a length of 18 metres and 67 charging stations from BYD. The total order, including the articulated buses and charging stations, is worth 33.3 million euros. The PNRR is also providing support here. BYD received a major order for the twelve-metre version of its electric bus model from De Lijn in Belgium at the end of last week.
