Rivian built about 57,000 electric vehicles in 2023
Last year, Rivian produced 57,232 electric cars at its plant in Normal and delivered 50,122 units. The electric car startup thus easily met its recently revised annual target of 54,000 vehicles. The Rivian currently builds the R1T Pickup and the R1S SUV, as well as the Electric Delivery Van (EDV) for Amazon, which is manufactured on a separate line. The company does not provide a breakdown of how many units of each model it built in 2023.
A strong final quarter with 17,541 EVs produced made a major difference in the annual results. Deliveries, on the other hand, slowed down last quarter, with 13,972 EVs handed over to customers between October and December. By comparison, Rivian recorded 13,992 and 16,304 units produced and 12,640 and 15,564 deliveries in the second and third quarters, respectively. The increase in production from the third to the fourth quarter was thus 7.5 per cent. Deliveries, on the other hand, fell by 11.4 per cent.
Rivian will present its complete financial results for the fourth quarter on 21 February. Meanwhile, it is already known that Rivian received final approval from the relevant authorities for the construction of its second plant in November 2023. The new factory in Georgia will be able to produce 200,000 electric vehicles per year in the first expansion stage and will go into operation in 2024. An expansion to 400,000 electric vehicles per year will be completed by 2030.
One thing is clear: the US electric car manufacturer is likely to increasingly speculate on orders from third parties for its EVs. A few months ago, it became public that the company was cancelling its exclusivity clause with Amazon. Both sides are keeping quiet about the details. However, Amazon stated that the move had been planned anyway.
The exclusivity clause dates back to 2019, when Amazon agreed with Rivian to purchase 100,000 electric vans by 2030. The first electric vans have been in use for Amazon since last year.
